Final Fantasy VIII
Rinoa... Even if you end up as the world's enemy, I'll... I'll be your knight... Squall
Personality At the beginning of the game, Squall is an introverted, moody teenager who refuses to let anyone form a bond with him. This is because of his past which is revealed later throughout the story. Later, he learns to trust people and he even falls in love with Rinoa. Squall is withdrawn, but once he knows what to do he will not shrink from what he considers his duty. He doesn't like being pointed out as the leader, but he is the first to ensure that what is necessary gets done. Squall has a clear mind and a strong sense of responsibility, therefore others trust and follow him. At Balamb Garden, he is quite popular, although everybody in Balamb agrees on how difficult Squall can be. The staff and the students of Balamb really admire him. Most of the times, Squall wears a distinctive black bomber jacket with fur trim on the collar and he's always seen with his Gunblade. Squall's rival is Seifer and during one of their training sessions together, they badly injure each other. Seifer then leaves a trademark facial scar on Squall. Squall immediately returns the favor and gives Seifer a scar just the opposite way as Seifer did, also between the eyes. Squall's most used sentence in the game is probably "Whatever...", which he uses a lot of times as a response. History It is implied that Squall's mother is Raine Loire and that he was born in Winhill. Raine died shortly after he was born. His father, Laguna Loire, never knew that Raine was pregnant, as he was in Esthar saving his adopted daughter Ellone frm the clutches of Sorceress Adel. After Raine passed away, both Squall and Ellone, who was sent back to Winhill by Laguna, were sent to an orphanage on the Centra continent. The orphanage was run by Edea Kramer and Ellone was Squall's closest friend, calling her "Big Sis". It is unknown whether he knew about their sibling bond. Due to Ellone's unique power to send a person's consciousness back in time, she was eventually sent away from the orphanage to be under the protection of a group of older orphans called the White SeeDs. No one told Squall why "Sis" left, and he assumed that she abandoned him. Due to the emotional pain of this assumption he developed a defensive mechanism that caused him to be an emotionally detached, highly cynical and introverted boy who wished to go through life without any emotional links or dependencies. This is the source of his lack of social skills. Squall think that he was never adopted because of his difficult personality, so between the age 5-10, he was admitted into Balamb Garden to train as a SeeD. He choose to train with the Gunblade, which is a difficult weapon to master and takes years of training. This wasn't a factor as Squall kept to himself and trained whenever he could. He quickly became Seifer's rival, who is a mirror image of Squall in many ways. Seven years later Squall has became known as a "lone wolf" to his peers. His superiors, such as his teacher Quistis Trepe, regard him as difficult to deal with but greatly respect his natural talents. The rivalry between him and Seifer has grown to become common knowledge amongst the Balamb students. Also, due to his use of GFs Shiva and Quezacotl, his memory has weakened, remembering only the feelings of abandonment he felt when Ellone left. As the games starts Squall is near the end of his education and, after the Field Exam, he graduates along with Selphie, Zell and Nida. Fighting Style Squall carries a unique own model of the Gunblade, featuring a stenciled image of the Guardian Force Grieveron both sides f the blade as well as possessing a chained pendant of Griever's head attached to the base of the handle. The Gunblade is a difficult weapon to master and it takes years of training. When he graduates as a SeeD, Headmaster Cid tells him that he is glad that there is finally a Gunblade Master again. As Squall attacks an enemy, you can significantly raise the damage caused by the attack by pressing the Trigger button just before he makes contact. The timing is tricky at first, but soon it will become second nature. A good audio clue is to listen for the swipe of Squall's Gunblade. When you hear it, press the Trigger.
